An acid wash removes a thin layer of stained plaster to expose clean surface underneath. It is the right call when staining has embedded into the finish and brushing and chemical treatment can no longer lift it.

How often can a pool be acid washed?
Sparingly. Each wash removes a thin layer of plaster, so the surface has a finite number of them in it before it needs resurfacing. It is a restoration step, not a maintenance routine — a pool needing one every year has an underlying chemistry or circulation problem worth solving instead.
Will an acid wash fix a green pool?
It fixes what a green pool leaves behind. Clearing the water is a chemical and filtration job; the staining that algae leaves on the plaster afterward is what an acid wash addresses. Often the water is cleared first and the surface assessed once you can actually see it.
How long does the pool stay out of service?
The pool is drained, treated, neutralized, refilled and rebalanced, so plan on being out of the water for several days. The refill itself is usually the longest single part, and it depends on your pool volume and water pressure.
Is an acid wash safe for my plaster?
When done properly, yes — but it is genuinely unforgiving work. Acid left too long, applied unevenly or not fully neutralized damages the finish and can leave streaking worse than the staining you started with. This is not a good candidate for a first DIY attempt.
