Pool Draining
Pool draining replaces water that chemistry can no longer correct. It is done in a controlled sequence because an improperly drained pool can crack its plaster or lift out of the ground under groundwater pressure.
What You Get
Why draining is not just "pump it out"
Hydrostatic pressure
An empty shell with wet ground beneath it can float or crack. Timing and groundwater conditions matter.
Plaster exposure
Bare plaster left in Arizona sun dries, cracks and discolors. Time out of water is managed, not incidental.
Partial vs full
Many pools only need a partial drain to bring dissolved solids back into range — cheaper and lower risk.
Responsible discharge
Water directed appropriately rather than dumped wherever is nearest.
Refill and rebalance
Fresh fill water is not balanced water. It gets corrected so it does not attack the finish.
Answers
Pool Draining questions, answered
How often does an Arizona pool need draining?
Less often than people assume, but more often than in wetter climates. High evaporation steadily concentrates dissolved solids, calcium and stabilizer in the water that remains, and eventually dilution is the only fix. Water with harder fill — Queen Creek and outlying areas especially — reaches that point sooner.
Is it safe to drain a pool myself?
It is riskier than it looks. The two real hazards are hydrostatic pressure lifting or cracking an empty shell, and bare plaster baking in direct sun. Both are avoidable with the right timing and sequence, and both are expensive to get wrong.
Do I need a full drain or a partial one?
A partial drain is often enough. Dissolved solids and stabilizer are corrected by dilution, so replacing a portion of the water frequently brings the numbers back into range at a fraction of the cost and risk of a full drain. Testing tells you which one you need.
How long can a pool sit empty?
As briefly as possible. An empty pool is under structural stress and its finish is exposed to UV and heat, so the work is planned so the pool goes back into water promptly rather than sitting drained between visits.
