What gets tested and why it matters
Free chlorine
The sanitizer actually available to work. Arizona sun destroys it fast, which is why stabilizer matters here.
pH
Drives whether chlorine works at all. Drift high and sanitizer effectiveness collapses; drift low and water attacks surfaces and metal.
Total alkalinity
The buffer holding pH steady. Out of range and pH bounces no matter how much you dose.
Calcium hardness
Too low and water pulls calcium out of plaster; too high and it deposits as scale on tile and equipment.
Cyanuric acid (stabilizer)
Shields chlorine from UV. Critical in Arizona — and a problem of its own once it climbs too high.

Why does my chlorine disappear so fast?
Usually UV, and usually low stabilizer. Unstabilized chlorine can be largely destroyed by a single day of direct Arizona sun. Cyanuric acid slows that down dramatically — but too much of it makes the chlorine you have less effective, so the goal is a working range, not simply more.
What order should chemicals be corrected in?
Alkalinity first, then pH, then sanitizer, with calcium hardness and stabilizer addressed as longer-term corrections. Chasing pH before alkalinity is stable is the single most common reason home dosing never seems to hold.
What causes scale on my tile?
High calcium hardness combined with high pH, which Arizona evaporation drives naturally — as water evaporates, dissolved calcium stays behind and concentrates in what remains. Left long enough it forms the hard white line at the waterline, which typically needs mechanical removal rather than chemistry.
Can water get so far out of balance that it cannot be corrected?
Yes. When dissolved solids or stabilizer climb high enough, no amount of chemical addition brings the water back — dilution is the only remedy, which means a partial or full drain and refill. Steady maintenance is what keeps a pool from reaching that point.
